There is an interesting thing that often happens when God speaks to his people. I’ll give you a few examples and see if you can catch the common thing God does in every instance:
Blessed are thou, Nephi, for those things which thou hast done;
And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutes thou me?
And I have a work for thee, Moses, my son;
One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!
Did you catch the similarity in every verse? Yep, you are right, in every instance God talks to someone and calls them by name. Even when he is talking to Saul and rebuking him for his persecutions of the Saints, God still knows his name!
What a remarkable and powerful concept! Elain S. Dalton powerfully taught this important doctrine. She said, “Did you know that Heavenly Father knows you personally—by name? The scriptures teach us that this is true. You may not have heard the Lord call you by name, but He knows each one of you and He knows your name. Each of you has a part to play in this great and marvelous work. The Savior will help you. He will lead you by the hand. He knows you by name.” (“He Knows You by Name” April 2005)
Notice how she teaches that not only does God know you, and know you by name, but she teaches the impact of God knowing you. Just like with prophets of old, God knows you and God will help you! God knew Moses by name and helped Him. God knew Joseph Smith by name and helped him. God knows you by name and you have the loving, caring, and powerful God of the universe there to help you.
Today is a day for confidence and peace. Today is a day to move forward with confidence knowing that you are known and loved. “For God so loved the world” means you. It is a very personal thing with God. He isn’t just working with masses of unknown people. He is working individually with His children that he knows by name. And today is a day of peace because the same God that helped Moses part waters and Nephi build a boat promises to help you too!
Let’s grab that love and those promises and move today with confidence and peace!
